lead provides Governance Support.

Our governance support encompasses the four dimensions of governance: strategy, stewardship, stakeholder relationships and board maintenance.

The LEAD team is experienced in the delivery of evidence-based, realistic approaches to governance, especially with small and medium-sized community organisations.

Since 1999, LEAD’s team have trained thousands of community leaders, published papers and resources on governance, designed and delivered governance focused graduate and postgraduate qualifications, and also conducted our own research on what good governance looks like in Aotearoa New Zealand community organisations.

We work with both boards and individuals to provide governance training, governance consultation, board facilitation, and board mentoring in governance support. Training and facilitation are often delivered in conjunction during a one day session.

We work with boards on a personal basis (in person or via Zoom) and also deliver public governance training on behalf of local and regional organisations. To see our upcoming training sessions on offer, please click here.

lead’s governance support services:

  • With the right information board can govern well and get on with the job of making a difference in their organisations and communities. Topics range from: Introduction to Governance (e.g. what is governance, how governance groups add value, governance roles and responsibilities; the manager/board partnership, effective meeting practice and legal obligations etc) to sessions for experienced board members (e.g. working with difficult people; robust decision making processes; strategic and generative thinking).

Bespoke training sessions for you board are designed to address your governance questions and include an appreciation of the lifecycle stage of your board. Our generic training is based on sound literature and research as well as decades of working with boards, hearing their stories, and finding out what works.

  • Bringing in an external facilitator means your whole team can participate and the conversations will keep on track. We are available to facilitate processes for boards such as conflict resolution; board reviews; creating charters; designing a governance structure; or succession planning.

  • We strongly believe a community group or community organisation’s effectiveness to make a difference is strengthened through strategic conversations on the change they wish to see in the world and balancing this with good practical action steps towards measurable success. This, and our firm belief in context and culture being paramount, means we facilitate conversations to ensure organisations are able to build their own unique strategy and processes based on their own experiences and wisdom.

  • Like all leadership roles, having external support can provide you with support to reflect on what you do and how you do it. Mentoring is with either the whole board – (i.e. reflecting on meeting process, board performance etc) or individuals such as Chairs and office holders (reflecting and supporting good meeting processes, working through specific issues; personal leadership development). Mentoring can be either face to face or online.

  • More often than not, boards of community organisations are made up of very busy volunteers. Having a consultant come in to help out with the work of boards can fill out capacity gaps and alleviate some of the stress. We offer a range of support, including manager and CEO recruitment, organisation and board evaluations, manager appraisals, policy development, or constitution reviews.
